Red Kite, Black Mountain, Wales
Red Kite, Black Mountain, WalesThe red kite has a wingspan of around 175 centimeters (70 inches). They can always be recognized from other birds of prey by the shape of their tails. I had a wonderful couple of hours at the Red Kite centre at Landeusant. As food is put out for the kites in a field, you can watch and photograph from a hide. The birds seem to have a feeling for when this will happen, and the skies grow busy with large numbers of circling kites who then take turns to swoop down and grab their prize. Every bird seems to have its own character, and it is good to watch how they interact and jostle for their turn to feed.

Red Kites, Black Mountain, WalesThis pair might as well have posed for my photograph. The Tamron lens at 600mm can pick out the expressions on the birds’ faces and the character of individual birds. Having nearly died out, the red kite is now a conservation success story, and is everywhere in Wild Wales, and its habitat is also ever-expanding. My afternoon photographing these birds put the autofocus on my D850 through its paces, and was not found wanting!

Red Deer in Richmond Park
Red Deer in Richmond ParkI am so fortunate to live and work near Richmond Park. The woodland is unique and full of very ancient trees, and the deer are numerous and not hard to approach. I love to find secluded spots and watch the wildlife and forget how close to the city I am. The light was quite fortuitous here, and I like the fact that the foal’s head is highlighted inversely by having the sunlight on the ferns behind it. You can really feel the bond between the two animals in this picture.

A duck splashing about at Barnes Wetlands Centre
A duck splashing about at Barnes Wetlands CentreThe Wetlands Centre in Barnes, South West London, adjacent to the river Thames, is a haven for birds, otters and other wildlife of many kinds and an area of wilderness which makes you forget that you are in one of the world’s biggest cities. The centre recreates habitats from all over the world, populating them with species from those locations.
